Aves Mealwormfood

The calcium contents of insects (Invertebratae) is very low because they do not have an internal skeleton of calcium. Therefore, their use as a foodsource for birds and reptiles is of limited value, as the ratio between protein/fat and calcium is unbalanced.

In reptiles, the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin is insufficient through the absence of enough sunlight. A lack of both calcium from insects and vitamin D3 is the main cause of ill health and death of reptiles. Insectivorous birds, feeding their youngsters buffalo worms, mealworms, wax worms, fly pupae, crickets and or locusts, often develop a chronic deficiency of calcium.

Aves Mealworm food and Aves-Insect dustingpowder provide feedinsects with high contents of calcium and sufficient vitamin D3, all other vitamins, minerals and trace-elements. Several high protein sources are added to nourish the insects during their final day before being fed. Of significant value is that both Aves Mealworm food and Aves-Insect dustingpowder contain little iron to avoid iron intoxication.

How to use:
Aves Mealworm food is fed to mealworms, buffalow worms and morio worms. Starve the worms for two days, to empty their gut. Then increase the ambient temperature to 20° C to increase their activity and appetite. Offer the Mealworm food for one day only. Analyses show that the feeding value of the treated worms equals bird egg rearing food.

Advantages:

  • Contains calcium of high biological value
  • The calcium source is accepted and highly digestible
  • The calcium and phosphorus ratio is balanced
  • The feeding value of foodinsects equalizes bird egg rearing food
  • The iron contents has been minimised (40 ppm) to prevent iron intoxication
  • No antibiotics, prophylactic medicines and anti-oxidants
About Aves:
Avesproduct has specialised in the development and production of specialist birdfoods. Based on fundamental knowledge and research, Avesproduct’s high quality birdfoods have acquired an excellent name. Due to many years of intensive contacts with birdbreeders, Zoological Gardens and scientific Institutions, Avesproduct is able to give extensive, practical and objective advice. Through excellent service and professional guidance Avesproduct’s birdfoods have been used with great success since 1976.

Many questions are often raised about bird nutrition. The concept of the energy value, the desired nutritional value of bird diets, the differences between animal and plant protein, the function of vitamin E, the use of vitamin and mineral supplements are only a few examples. To our knowledge, only few professional nutritionists are working in the field of bird nutrition. Nutritional research published in Scientific and Avicultural Magazines are rather hindered by a shortage of professionally educated nutritionist with an interest in birds and bird nutrition than by financial funds. In our view both areas of expertise should go hand in hand. Avesproduct has published several books and numerous articles in the Dutch language. It is a challenge to translate parts into English and have them published on Internet.

J.P. Holsheimer, our senior research nutritionist, has a lifetime experience as a scientific researcher in avian nutrition. He is an invited member of The New York Academy of Sciences and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The honours were presented to him because of his publications in internationally recognised scientific magazines.
